Henry Merriweather is hoping to become the fastest runner to complete a Half marathon in full Highland dress!
Fundraising for Azalea by running the 2017 Royal Parks Half marathon wasn't enough of a challenge for Henry Merriweather from Glasgow.
Instead, he's decided to aim for a Guinness World Record at the same time by becoming the fastest person to run a half marathon kitted out in full Highland dress: right from the kilt and sporran to the traditional Scottish hat.
Henry says: "I took up running 5 years ago at our local Park Run 5k, and by 2013 I was doing my first half marathon. I’ve also run the London marathon twice. The Royal Parks will be my 12th half marathon - I usually run because I enjoy it so much, but this is the first time running for a charity.
Azalea do such an amazing job with some very vulnerable and exploited women in Luton. I’m delighted to be able to do what I can to help Azalea help them. As a father of four daughters, I hope none of them ever find themselves in a similar situation as these women, but if they did, it’s a comfort to know that projects like Azalea exist and are there to provide love and practical support.
I wanted to do something a bit different, and as a proud Scotsman running in Highland Dress seemed perfect (despite my surname 3 out of 4 of my Grandparents are Glaswegians). Someone ran 1hr 39mins in Highland Dress in Glasgow last weekend (still to be verified), so now I’ve really got my work cut out to break the record. I’ve been injured for a few months and am only just getting back to fitness. I ran a training run last weekend in all the gear. It was a cool evening but the outfit is heavy and I was sweating buckets. It’s going to be a challenge but I am up for it!"
Henry is one of five runners doing the Royal Parks Half Marathon for Azalea - if you'd like to sponsor them, here is their fundraising page.
